Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 on June 22, 1939 in Lynn Massachusetts. She was the first child born to Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. After her father died as a Carnival barker when Ruth was just an infant, she had to help keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth lived in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. In the midst of only two years in school, Ruth left to pursue the acting career. It was not without problems. After landing a gig at New York as a model for a detective magazine she found it difficult to get work for stage. She then worked as the hat checker in an evening club, before deciding to call it quits and returning to Boston. In Boston, she was able to earn a living as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she was a part of the New England Repertory Company. It was her first role as an actor. She received a master's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
